The one room school house of the old west has been reincarnated. Online instructors today are often teaching multiple groups of students at once in rolling enrollment models, for multiple entities, or in multiple blended classes. Managing students online can be like herding cats! Online instructors will learn ready to use techniques to organize and manage student information, communication, and needs. The challenge is to facilitate learning and at the same time meet employer expectations. How do you keep kids on pace and continue to motivate them?
The key is communication! One suggestion is to tell the student you cannot start until after you communicate with the instructor.—Telephone, text message, email, and skype are all great communication tools.
Set a schedule for when you are available to students.
Organization is just as important as organization. It’s important to keep track of students and information if you have multiple enrollments. A good way to do this is to keep a rolling spreadsheet. You can color code this information as well to signify special items/circumstances
How do you keep on top of email, especially if you have multiple accounts? One way to do this is to import all of them into Gmail, or another similar program. Why? You can use Gmail on smartphones, ipads/ipods, tablets, etc. You can also label it to show which account the email is coming from. Gmail also will thread email chains as well so you can see all of them at once, and sort them as well via the gmail search.
Some management systems will allow you to email within and then it also logs that contact into the student information.—Connections Academy’s product does this, as does K-12 and Odysseyware.
A challenge becomes when you work with multiple districts and they have differing policies in regards to communications.
The key is to schedule your time when working with students asynchronously? Using Google scheduler is one possible option. Jiffle is another option but it’s a product that is no longer free. https://www.jifflenow.com/
Remember you are allowed to have a life as well as being a teacher.
Another thing you can do is automate some of your email responses, have preformatted emails, or release certain emails by condition or restriction. Work with what you have to make it possible.
